Each month Simulation magazine features a different simulation application on its cover. In August 2000, a model of an airport security checkpoint was chosen. This model utilized Extend and Proof Animation to simulate and animate proposed changes to an existing security system. It is currently being used in the FAA’s Airport Security Technology Integration (ASTI) Program to evaluate the effects on passenger flow of new airport security checkpoint equipment and procedures prior to installation. The ASTI Program integrates software, hardware, training, procedures, airport design, and the National Airspace System (NAS) design into a total aviation security system designed to provide maximum protection with the least risk and operational impact.

The checkpoint model was developed by Mark Kukulich of TRW Systems and Information Technology Group in Fairfax, VA, under contract to the FAA’s Aviation Security Research and Development Systems Integration Branch (AAR-510) at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ, and in cooperation with American Airlines’ Corporate Security at Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport. For more information on the model, contact Kelly Leone, FAA Aviation Security, at 609- 485-4295 or via email at kelly.leone@tc.faa.gov.
